Whirled Artists Exhibiting

Alison Clarke

I am working on a series of painted portraits of strangers, Girl in a Yellow DressGirl in a Yellow Dresscaptured by camera-phone, in secret on the London Underground. These are people I have shared my journeys with – and I have shared theirs.
The tube is my access to London and to Londoners. My paintings are bright, figurative, intimate, and a personal insight into how I observe my fellow passengers – on any random London journey. I had a break from painting – for several years – preferring the immediacy of photography and my continuing study of life drawing. The influence of photography is present – however, I would say that drawing, and the human form is and always has been, my greatest inspiration – for all manner of art forms. I am happy to do private commissions, and no, you don’t necessarily have to go underground to sit for me…

Glass can be fluid, it can be hard as iron: it can be - stretched, shaped, melted, poured, blown, cut, ground, drilled, polished and broken. It can be transparent, translucent or completely opaque.
It can appear to change in different light and lighting conditions. Add to this the potential tone and colour choices and glass emerges as an unparalleled raw material for artistic expression.

I have been working with stained glass for over 15 years. My work is mainly via commissions for new stained glass windows, although a fair proportion of my work is renovating original windows in period properties. I work closely with clients on pattern and colours to ensure that they feel part of the process of creating something unique that suits their property. I offer free consultations and estimates.
I also make stained glass-framed mirrors, in many different styles and sizes, which can be purchased from stock, or can be commissioned to order.

In 2002 I have won the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers Student Award and co-organized the Hungarian-British touring contemporary glass exhibition, Fragile Cargo in 2004-2005.

Oil on BoardOil on Board
I work as a painter using the traditional tools of gesso, paint and varnish applied to a two-dimensional surface.
I play with the idea of beauty and through my work try to eliminate the obstacles between me, the observer and that idea.

Have you ever observed someone and been struck by how animal-like they can appear to be – either physically or in their behavior? Conversely, animals can display very similar characteristics to humans.
In creating animal sculptures, giving them personalities and human characteristics, I am highlighting their importance as individual creatures. We all have a place in this world.
The sculptures are humorous, more by their nature rather than by design, but humour is an essential quality I believe so that’s OK.

This is seriously light-hearted work.

I work mainly with cast sheet glass creating three dimensional puzzles. Recently I have started working on a larger scale.
The new works have been inspired mainly by the Egyptian heads in the British Museum.
My works can be seen at the Studio Glass Gallery on Connaught Street, Marble Arch.

Jane

I make hand-built vessels that explore different themes; current work considers transition and change. Work draws on the landscape, using abstraction, colour, texture and mark-making as a means of expression.
Forms incorporate collaged sheets of paper clay, which have been impressed with oxides and/or stains prior to assembling.
As visual counterpoint, a series of porcelain, slip-cast pieces is also being developed.
Jane studied on the Ceramics Diploma Course at the City Lit and on the BA (Hons) Ceramics Course at University of Westminster (Harrow).

All my works are a bringing together of contrasts – wet and dry, wriggling and still, sharp edges and blunt forms. Each piece is the product of an evolution of visual details that I’ve been gathering and using for several years. The recurring theme is in the reinvention of an elegant style that teeters on the edge of vulgarity; creating subverted Rococo forms that burst to create a light-hearted sensuality.

I work outside, at beaches and rivers, incorporating the natural water source into the process of making the work. The interaction of water, colour and surface, in a particular place and time is a constant preoccupation.
Recent work has been in different locations along the River Thames.
The movement and flow of water across the paper as it meets the paint leaves a unique trace. Maybe only seconds apart, but in that new moment of weather, tide and wind, the paper records a new image. I apply the colour simply and directly in order to maximize the waters role in creating the result.

In 2001 I was awarded a Champions for Change Millennium grant, and more recently was commissioned by Hermes UK to produce artwork for display in their London shop windows.

I record and interpret life in its raw and unrefined state: the post-coital encounter in the bedroom, the heady euphoria of the party. My work may be seen as voyeuristic, I see myself as a hidden camera at times. I am essentially an artist who thrives on the dissonances of urban life. I am interested as much in the situation itself as I am in the choreography of that situation; how the characters inter-react and how the shapes create their own dynamic on the canvas are both important elements to my work.

I graduated from Camberwell College of Arts - Drawing in 2005, and have continued to explore my subject through mixed media painting at my new home at Whirled Art Studios.

I am drawn to the everyday spaces around us and the play between interior and exterior space; the hard edged & organic. I have recently taken a new approach to my work which has taken me in some new directions.

Sally

PlatePlate

My work explores the endless possibilities of pattern. Glass has provided another dimension as I can manipulate layers of colour in a way I never thought was possible.
Each piece is unique, and from one design to the next the work is growing in complexity as I understand more about the raw material. 2006 has seen my reputation grow.
I sold all my work which was exhibited at the British Glass Biennale in Stourbridge this summer, and currently have work in several galleries.
I am also expanding my jewelery range this Winter.

Stefano

Piacentini DesignPiacentini Design

Stefano, having ten years of experience in the field of restoration and conservation of wood has gained valuable experience within his trade from working with different restorers and craftsmen. This has led to a key knowledge of many different skills, including that of; reconstruction of missing parts both in wood and iron, French polishing and all the aptitude that expert restoration demands.

He loves the job and it appeals greatly to him to use and to experience the different natural resins and several of restoration techniques.

Since moving to London Stefano has been able to further his knowledge and expertise within his trade and has began to work closely with installation and exhibition set-ups. With this, 2006 saw the birth of Urban Wood Rhymes, which sees beyond just the conservation and restoration of the wood and seeks to collaborate with different skills to create a mix of creativity and artistic creation.
